December Update
Thanks for everyone pitching in to help with the Refrigerator Box decorating. I also wanted to thank all the parents that are pitching in to help with upcoming Pack events. Den 11 is well represented and I am proud of everyone for stepping up. As we have been told, scouting is lead by volunteer Scouters (parents and Adults who have an interest in seeing scouts learn the scout values, have fun, and mature into outstanding young men).
Recycling Center
Another great time at today’s Den Meeting. What a relief that it wasn’t the transfer station like I originally thought. The scouts were very well behaved and asked great questions.
In order to complete Achievement #7 scouts should find 3 stories about how people are protecting our world. They can be articles books or TV shows. Then discuss them with their family. We will cover the last bits at the next meeting on December 11, 2010.
December & January Upcoming Events
Great stuff at the Roswell Police Station tonight! The scouts learned about some Rosewell Police History, How the 911 Center works, what an Evidence Room is, and met some of Roswell’s finest.
Next Den Meeting 12/02/2010
Our next Den Meeting will be about “Our Living World,” Achievement #7. Frank Hunter has arranged for the scouts to meet at the Roswell Transfer Station to find out what happens to our trash and about recycling.

Another great Den Meeting. Thanks Dan for hosting and putting all the prep work in for this meeting. I am very proud of the scouts and their progress towards their Wolf Badge and Elective Chevrons. Tonight we had a lot of fun and completed the following:
November Den Meetings
Great Den Meeting
Next Den Meeting
October 28th Den Meeting:
Out next Den Meeting will be this Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Alex’s House from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. I will send out a separate e-mail with our address and directions. We will be outside for this meeting so dress appropriately and I will have a fire going to warm up by. We will be finishing up a couple achievements and the scouts will earn their first Wolf Bead after this meeting. Scouts will also receive their very own state flag and learn flag etiquette. If you missed the Feats of Skills Den Meeting we will catch you up and complete this Achievement. Please be sure to bring your Scout Values board project if you have completed them.
Please bring your completed Health Habits Chart, Achievement 3a to the Den Meeting on Thursday.
Chores Home Work:
Over the next couple months, our Den Meetings will require more and more work at home with the family and then sharing your experiences with the Den. On Thursday we will hand out a chart for the scouts to chart the chores they do at home. This will mesh well with our Pack goal for scouts to earn money doing chores at home to purchase a gift for the Garrison Mill Gift Tree. This year money earned at home doing chores can be donated to purchase a bicycle that will be put under the Garrison Mill giving tree.
November 4th Den Meeting:
On November 4, 2010 we will have our Den Meeting planned by Daniel Lee’s family. At this meeting each scout will construct their own Raingutter Regatta boat. At the November Pack Meeting, we will set up several 10’ lengths of rain gutter and fill them with water. Scouts will blow (lung power) their boats to the finish line. And remember, if your son sold more than $300 in popcorn, he can throw a pie in David Jane’s face at this Pack Meeting.
Look ahead:
If you want to be working on the November and December family achievements, you can use your Wolf Handbook and complete the achievements listed below:
- Achievement 4e, Chart your Chores - Due 11/11/2010
- Achievement 9, If you have already earned your Emergency Preparedness Pin, you have already completed this Achievement. If you participated in the Bike Rodeo then you have completed part “e”. Due 11/11/2010

Den Calendar
Wolf Bowling Meeting
Den Meetings
I wanted to thank Dave Grachen for taking the scouts through the feats of skill (Achievement #1). We will revisit these when we are camping and finish up with the catch and throw activity.
Also, last night we went through Keeping Your Body Healthy (Achievement 3b & 3c). We had a lot of fun with the fake blood and the scouts practicing how to care for a small cut. And thanks to Robert Payne (who was visiting our Den last night for being the victim and being wrapped from head to toe. We will review these two tasks again at the All Wolf Den Meeting/Bowling Belt Loop activity on 9/26/2010.
There is a homework assignment for the Achievement #3 in your Wolf handbook (Achievement 3a). This will be due at the 10/28/2010 Den 11 Meeting.
I also handed out awards last night that included the Outdoor Activity Award (Patch) for every member of the Den. The patch is sewn on the right pocket flap of the scouts Class-A uniform. Den 11 also will receive the Summertime Activity Award Ribbon to go on our new Den Flag. We received this award for more than 50% of our Den attending a Pack Activity in each of the months of June, July and August. Those scouts that attended all three events (Scout Day Camp, Pack Picnic, and the August Pack Meeting) also receive a Summertime Activity Pin. The pin is placed on the Outdoor Activity Award Patch on the right pocket flap – just push the pin through the patch and secure the pin clasp.

10/28/2010 Den 11 Meeting 6:30 – 7:30 PM
Den Meeting Thursday 9/16/2010 at Garrison Mill Track
At this Thursday’s den meeting we will cover putting a bandaid on and how to prevent the spread of the flu. I would like parents to come prepared to get injured with fake cuts and to be sick. I will also need some help in organizing a couple of feats of strength activities. During this fun running around, a parent will yell that they have been injured and their son will need to come over and put a bandaid on it and or call to get help.
I also have a special surprise. Each scout will receive a small first aid kit they can attached to a back pack or belt where they can carry small bandages.
Business Items for Den 11
To recap then, below are the business items that we tried to cover last night.
1. I handed out Den Meeting assignments for November through March. Unfortunately, I did not write down what everyone volunteered for. Please send me an e-mail with what you have.
Den Meeting # 5 & 6 (November)
Den Meeting # 7 & 8 (December)
Den Meeting # 9 & 10 (January)
Den Meeting # 11 & 12 (February)
Den Meeting # (13 March)
Dan Lee, who has December, is looking to trade with someone. If you can trade, please contact Dan. I was also planning on doing a Den Meeting at Fall Family Camping like we did last year. I will need some help with this one as well.
2. Please let me know who is coming to Fall Family Camping, October 8-10, 2010 at Bert Adams Scout Reservation. Be prepared to sign up at the September Pack Meeting (bring your check book).
3. The next Pack Meeting is Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Garrison Mill. We will be having a Bike Rodeo so bring your bike and your helmet. You can also look at earning the Bicycling Pin if you are so inclined.
Requirements for the Bicycling PinEarn the Bicycling belt loop, and complete requirement 1 below, and do four additional requirements:
1. Make a chart to record at least 10 hours of bicycling. (Required)
2. Participate in a pack, den, or community bike rodeo.
3. Demonstrate how to repair a flat tire on a bicycle.
4. Make a poster illustrating different types of early bikes and show it to your den.
5. Give a demonstration to your den or pack on the proper use of safety equipment and gear.
6. With the help of a parent or adult partner, register or reregister your bicycle.
7. Go on a "bicycle hike" with your family or den. Obey traffic rules related to bicycling.
8. Repair or restore a nonfunctioning bicycle to a safe condition. Include the installation of all proper safety devices.
9. Visit a bicycle race or exhibition.
10. Help set up a bike rodeo or bike competition for your pack.
4. Cub Scout Values Project: Last night the scouts drew pieces of paper to make a board representing each Cub Scout Value. Here are the more specific instructions:
a. Obtain a piece of 1” x 4” board 18” long. If you have scrap wood laying around the house you can use that.
b. Drill 4 holes in the piece of wood so that they can be tied together and hung on a standard (pole). I will supply the twine to tie them together.
c. Engrave, paint, woodburn, or otherwise permanently write your assigned Cub Scout value on the piece of wood.
d. On the back of the piece of paper is the month that we will be talking about the assigned value. Bring your assigned project for the month indicated. You can also bring your project in early if you like.
e. Each scout should talk about the assigned value with their parents and then share what that value means at the appropriate Den Meeting.
5. I handed out the “Year of Celebration” patches last night. These patches and the ribbons you can earn are an optional activity that the scouts and even adults could earn. There are no requirements to wear the patch but the requirements to earn the ribbons can be found on-line at: http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/sitefiles/1000/YourSource/PlanningTools/YOC/YOC_Tracking_Cards.pdf
When you have earned a ribbon, let me know and I will complete the on-line form and order your ribbons. If you want you can also look up the on-line form and do it yourself however, if you go through the pack, the pack will pay for the ribbons.
I did print out the pocket version of the requirements for the scouts and will hand these out at the Pack Meeting on 9/14/2010.
6. Emergency Preparedness Pin
I am very proud of those scouts who earned the emergency preparedness pin. Each year we will continue to update this achievement and each year we will add more advanced learning such as Red Cross First Aid training. For those of you who have not yet completed this activity, you can complete this by doing the following:
a. Complete Wolf Cub Scout Achievement 9 (found in your Wolf handbook)—Be Safe at Home and on the Street. This is a check of your home to keep it safe.
b. Complete Wolf Cub Scout Elective 16 (found in your Wolf handbook) —Family Alert. This elective is about designing a plan for your home and family in case an emergency takes place.
c. Make a presentation to your Den on one thing that you have learned about preparing for emergencies.
7. Child Protection Home Work
Before the next Den Meeting, please review the small booklet found in the front of the Wolf Handbook called, “How to protect your child from child abuse.” Then report back at the next Den Meeting that this has been completed.
8. Next Den Meeting
We are really hard pushed to get some things in this year and September & October are very busy months. With the new school calendar, the Fall Break occupies 2 full weekends in September and there are activities each weekend in October. Therefore, I am moving forward with the next Den Meeting being Sunday 9/26/2010 from 2-3:30 PM at a local Bowling Alley. At this meeting we will work on the Bowling Belt-Loop and Achievements # 3b & 3c
3b. Tell four ways to stop the spread of colds.
3c. Show what to do for a small cut on your finger.
Please let me know if you cannot make this meeting. You can make up these activities then at home.
9. Den Calendar
Attached is the Den Calendar for the year. Note that the further out a Den activity is scheduled, the more likely it is to be rescheduled on another date. For each new sports season, we can also look at the day of the week we are meeting. I will work with you on your meeting plans and if the dates need to be moved. You will note that in March, if all the Wolfs have earned their badges the 3 Dens will have a Wolf party to celebrate. Last year after everyone earned their Tiger Badge, I felt the celebration was a bit anti-climatic and think a Wolf pizza party would be a howling good time.
Wow, that was a lot to cover, no wonder the boys were ready to head for the hills/playground. So what I need from you all is:
1. What Den Meetings did you volunteer for? _________________________
2. Can anyone switch meeting plans (December) with Dan Lee?
3. Are you going on the Fall Family Camping? _________________________
Thanks for all of your support for the scouts and participation in the Den. After one year of Cub Scouts I can definitely see the influence that scouting has had on Alex and that is due to all the parents involvement and support.
Dan
Our first Den Meeting will be Thursday September 2, 2010 at Garrison Mill Elementary under the covered playground from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
Lisa Baraji and David Janes have determined that Den 11 will stay as it is with no new members. That means that we can dive right into our meeting plan. At the first meeting we will
be making a new Den Flag. I have found out that our Pack has met the requirements for the National Summertime Activity Award and that Den 11 will receive a ribbon for our flag for having 50% of our Den attend each of three activities (Scout Summer Day Camp, Pack Picnic, and the August Den Meeting). So naturally, we will need a flag t
o put the ribbon on. In addition to the ribbon, scouts who attended all three events will receive a National Summertime Activity Pin to be worn on their uniform. I am also looking into if the PTA Flag Ceremony will count towards participation as well.
In addition we will start on a trial to cover the 12 values of Cub Scouts that will take us through the next 12 months. There will also be relay races and fun!
I will then hand out the meeting plans for October through March 2011 and will ask each family to take a months worth of planning (like we did last year).
Right now, I believe the consensus is to meet on Thursday nights. We will plan on two Den Meetings a month with the 1st and last Thursday of each month. However, some meetings will be better suited for a weekend, like some of the Go-See-Its were last year. We will finalize this decision at or first meeting. Let me know ahead of time if you have any concerns.
I did notice that the Calendar on the Den 11 Website is not correct anymore. Please check the Pack 471 calendar for Pack dates.
Welcome to the year of the Wolf for Den 11!
1st Pack Meeting:
The first Pack Meeting will be Tuesday, 8/17/2010 in the Garrison Mill Cafeteria. We will be registering for the next year. Registration will be $75.00 this year to help pay for awards, belt-loops, Pack activities, and recharter. Bring your check-book please.
Den Meetings:
We hold our 1st Den Meeting the week of September 7th. I need to know if anyone has a routine schedule for sports or other activities that would interfere with scheduling our meetings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. We may vary the second meeting of the month to accommodate trips and activities where we do a “go-see-it.” We may also get some new members after the August 17th Pack Meeting that we will need to incorporate into the Den. At our first meeting, I will be asking everyone to volunteer to take a month of meetings like we did last year.
Assistant Cubmaster
As some of you already know, I have elected to be one of the Assistant Cubmasters. In this role, I will act as a support to the Pack and as a Leader Trainer for other Den Leaders. I will need some help with the Den and making sure they are planned out for the year. If you are interested in stepping up to be the Official Den Leader, please feel free to give me a call. In the meantime, I will be at each Den Meeting and supporting each of you as I did last year.
This Week
Round 2 of the Pack Picnic was a great success. After getting rained out last week, this Saturday's picnic was a great success. The pool felt especially good after helping that morning to do some grounds work at Garrison Mill to get ready for Sneak-A-Peak and the first day of school.
Follow-up to Emergency Preparedness Pin
It was good to see folks again and start back with our Den Meetings. Yesterday, we covered Part 1 of the Emergency Preparedness Pin. For those that were not able to attend, you can catch up on your own bycompleting Achievement #9 and Elective #16 found in the Wolf Hand Book. Since we had the bikes out for the Bike Safety portion of the training we were also able to complete the Biking Belt Loop.

Emergency Preparedness Pin - Meeting Dates
We will hold two Den Meetings prior to the school year kicking off to work on the Emergency Preparedness Pin. There will be three steps to the pin:
1. Homework: I will send out three checklists this week for homework. This should not take a lot of time but could save lives and prevent injuries in your family.
- Home Safety Checklist
- Family disaster Checklist
- 1st Aid Kit Recommended Supplies
2. Safety Training and Fun: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 (5:30 - 6:30 PM)
- Bring your bicycle to Garrison Mill School for bicycle safety and fun (don’t forget your helmet).
- We will cover the rest of the steps for Wolf Scout Achievement #9 and Elective #16.
3. Presentations: Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (5:30 - 6:30 PM)
- Scouts will present on something they learned. We may then look at presenting to the Pack some of the highlights as a Den.
Please get back with me on these dates. I want to be as flexible as we can so that everyone can participate.
Memorial Day Flag Ceremony
The sun pushed through the clouds and then shown bright on over 1000 scouts who gathered to honor those who served in the defense of our country. After the invocation and presentation of the colors, Pack 471 and many other scout
ers throughout the Foothills District picked up flags and proceeded to a gravestone. Each scout placed a small United States Flag in front of the grave stone and then gave a salute to honor the per son buried there. The Marietta National
Cemetery is an honored resting place for soldiers who fought in the War between the States and subsequent wars that followed.
One of the most moving moments for me was
when my son asked about a grave marker that only said ‘Unknown.’ After contemplating the meaning and talking about who this person may have been, he stated, “I am sad that this person died but glad that they could serve our country.”Pack Camp Out Follow-Up
It was good to see everyone at the Pack Family Camp Out at Northbrook Church last Friday. Unfortunately not many of us were able to spend the night due to a torrential downpour. However, the beef brisket was fabulous and Den 11 officially crossed over to Wolf Scouts. For those of you who were unable to make it, Tiger Scouts were presented with an official Wolf Book and a new neckerchief. From now through next May, Den 11 will be working on Wolf Achievements and Electives (If you still need yellow beads from Tiger, I have some left). In addition, Cub Master David Janes announced that Pack 471 had earned the Centennial Quality Unit Award this year (see picture). A Quality Unit Award Ribbon will be added to our Pack Flag and all scouts and leaders will receive a Centennial Quality Unit Patch that they can sew on their uniform.
The camp out also was the last Pack Meeting of the year until next fall. However, there are still lots of other activities on the calendar. We will add two additional Den Meetings over the summer and work on Cub Scout Values with fun at the top of that list. We will also work on earning the Emergency Preparedness Pin. Other events include:
Memorial Day Flag Ceremony; May 29, 2010 - Pack 471 will take part in putting flags on the graves at Marietta National Cemetery. Uniform is Dress A with jeans or jean shorts (no sports pants or shorts).
District Day Camp: June 14-18, 2010 (there is still time to sign up
but must have all paperwork in by 5/31/2010).
4th of July Parade: Scouts at Day Camp will be building a float for the Marietta 4th of July Parade. All scouts are welcome to participate though in the parade. Uniform is Dress A with jeans or jean shorts (no sports pants or shorts).
Pack 471 Pool Party. We are looking for a date in July to hold the Pack 471 Pool Party at the Jefferson Township Pool - stay tuned for details.
Annual Planning: Pack 471 will hold its annual planning meeting in June. More details will be coming out soon and all interested Pack parents are welcome.

Also, if you have earned additional yellow disks for electives, please let me know and I will get them to you.

Pack 471 Rocket Launch
What a fun day at the Rocket Launch! I probably lost count but I estimate that we launched about 40 rockets. Just to update anyone who did not hear, there was a tragedy on board the Den 11 Alpha III Rocket. It was a well built ship (Ashton, Andrew, and Alex built it at our Den 11 Ice Cream Social) and it had a spectacular launch. Unfortunately, it drifted off course on the re-entry and was lost on the other side of the woods in the river. The Pack gave the Den 11 rocket a hardy Cub Scout salute as it disappeared over the trees.
If you are interested in being a volunteer and or bringing a sibling you may do so and there will also be registration information available at the Pack Meeting. For additional information please visit the Foothills District and the Pack 471 Website at:

Blue and Gold Banquet Preparations
Wow, what a great trip last weekend to the USS Yorktown. I am more and more amazed at how much the boys picked up about national service and history while having a great time. I also want to say that the scouts were all well behaved and respectful, a testament to the parent involvement from our Den. Please send your pictures to Matt Lawson so he can get them posted on the Website.
The Blue and Gold Banquet is coming up Sunday, February 21, 2010. You must purchase Tickets to attend (we really need a head count so we can order the food). If you have not signed up yet, please contact Katja Dell at katjad@bellsouth.net. Our Den will be entering a table center piece and doing a skit.
For the table center piece, we nominated Frank Hunter to help build a representation of a Pinewood Derby track. I heard that the Grachen’s and Sanders’ have offered to help. Matt Lawson will print out all the pictures everyone has been sending him and then the scouts will decorate the race billboards, and side of the track with pictures representing this years theme, “This Year in Scouting.”
For the Skit, we will do a skit - a small Public Service Announcement on Scouting (that also counts for an elective). I will be sending out the parts for each scout in by Monday so that they can start practicing.
Dad’s and scouts (no mom’s) will be joining in a cake baking contest (see the pack Website for rules). Note: Cake’s will be judged by the scouts so think like a Scout and work with your son’s to come up with a winning idea. The theme for the cakes is, “Favorite thing in Scouting.”
In order to prepare for the Blue and Gold, we will be having our next Den Meeting on February 18, 2010 at Daniel Lee’s house from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Please plan on being at the meeting to help decorate the center piece.

Friday, Jan 22 5:30 – 7:30 PM Initial Weigh-In period
Saturday, Jan 23 12:00 – 4:00 PM Final Weigh-In period
Each scout must weigh in their car prior to the day of the race at one of the official race weigh-in dates above, or by appointment. You are free to weigh in the cars as often as you like prior to the Final Weigh-In period, subject to the dates above. After final weigh-in, the cars will remain at the Ingram’s house for judging and will be transported to the race by the race committee.
Public Use Digital Scales: You are free to use the Post Office digital scales incorporated into the self mailing kiosk. To use the scales, click mail envelope and place the car, wheels, axels and weight on the scales until you reach 5 oz, then just affix the weight to the car. While the pack holds the official digital scale, the Post Office scales are very accurate.

Tiger Scout Electives
Most of the scouts have now completed all the requirements for their Tiger Badges. I just need a couple more parents to report their progress on one or two things. Once the scout has completed all 15 Achievements, they can start earning the yellow disks. 1 yellow disk can be earned for every 10 electives.
Please keep track of your electives and let me know at the Den Meetings how many yellow disks have been earned.
