Upcoming Den Meeting

Our next Den Meeting is Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Matthew Grachen's House (where we had our first Den Meeting).

I want to ensure that we recognize all the scouts for all their achievement beads. Please send Matt and myself an updated list of your son's achievements. You should be working on the 5 Family acheivements. If you miss a Den Activity or a Go-See-It, you can make that up as a family and still get credit.

On Tuesday, we will also give those scouts who participated in fall sports (flag football, soccer, baseball, etc.) a chance to earn their belt loops for that sport by sharing with the Den.

GoSeeIt Reminder - Tomorrow!

All,

As an update, the October GoSeeIt is tomorrow at 4pm. CLICK HERE for the link for the information. We will meet at the Main Office at 3:45pm

Please let us know if you will or will not make it, so we know when to stop waiting for people to show up.

Thanks!

Pack Meeting Honor Guard

I had told a few of you that Den 11 has been assigned to be the Honor Guard at tomorrow nights Pack Meeting - another reason to bring your cameras.

We were going to practice a bit at the camp out but the cold weather, outdoor setting, and rigorous schedule of activities made practice a bit impractical.

If you can make it, please arrive at 6:00 PM (1/2 hour early) so we can set up and run through it at least once. Most importantly, I need to find two scouts that can carry the flags without letting the flags touch the floor. Remember to have the scouts in their Class A Uniform.

Thanks!

Dan
Wow! what a great camping trip! I am very buzzed about what was accomplished. Most importantly, I am very grateful for the time I was able to spend with my son and I know that many parents had the same experience. Matt Lawson and I will check to see what process we can use to post pictures and let you know.

Remember that tomorrow night is the October Pack Meeting all the scouts of Den 11 will receive their Bobcat Badges - Bring your cameras!

Fall Family Camping - Update

Hey everyone, there was some new information distributed about the Fall Family Camping. Everything is posted on the Pack website here: http://gmpack471.org/wordpress/?page_id=76

Make sure to review the posts on what to bring below, and print out the directions and other information! We will be at campsite numbered (5) on the Camp Map, named Jones. It is close to the back of the reservation, near the lake.

There are some good blocks of free time, so the Den will use some for finishing up Bobcat stuff, if needed, practicing our "Color Guard" for the next Pack meeting, and just "cutting loose"! (Heck, there's a lake if you are interested in dropping a line!)

An email came out about some compass training on Saturday morning. If you have one, great! If not, they have them at the camping/sport area in Wal-Mart, not too expensive to real cheap!

It's supposed to be VERY cold tomorrow night, so make sure to bring warm clothes, a good sleeping bag, and more for the night! If it gets real cold, at least we can earn our Extreme Winter Survival Skills & Frostbite Recovery badges ;-)

Feel free to contact Dan and I for any questions. I believe Dan will be there earlier than I, but who can tell with Atlanta traffic?

Early Nov GoSeeIt Information

Our second GoSeeIt has been planned by the Grachen's. It will be at the Roswell Fire Station on Alpharetta Street, on November 8th from 2-3pm. Go 92 to Alpharetta Hwy, head south, and it is near Norcross Street:

First GoSeeIt Information

I have secured a 1 hour tour at the Marietta Daily Journal for our Scouts on October 28th at 4pm. This will accomplish the October GoSeeIt that we planned for. Their website is here: http://www.mdjonline.com/

We should probably plan to be there at 3:45pm. I gave them the number of 7 adults and 7 kids. If you need to bring some siblings, let me know!

Also, let us know if you can/can't make it. If there are open spots, we can always offer them up to other scouts in the pack, as well.

Here is a map. Click it for a more detailed view:

I checked with David Janes, our Cubmaster on the uniform for the camping trip.

Scouts will be expected to wear Class-A (Button Down Blue Shirt and Neckerchief) at the Opening Ceremony Saturday morning. Because first rotation starts quickly after ceremony, some boys just keep the blue shirt on all day and give neckerchiefs to their parents. Class-A needs to be worn to the campfire Saturday evening too. Boys could wear Pack-471 Tee Shirt under Class-A and take the Class-A off if it gets hot. We encourage the Pack-471 Tee or Class-A in the campsite on Saturday. If you stick around for Sunday morning assembly, Class-A shirt then too.

Note: With the cold weather, you will want to be sure that they have a coat/jacket/sweatshirt to wear as needed over their uniform.

November Den Meeting

The November Den Meeting will be:

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
6:30 - 7:30 PM
At Matthew Grachen's House

4629 Wickford Circle
Rosewell, GA

Mark your calendars!

Camping Trip List

I have been meaning to get out a list to all campers in Den 11 on what you should bring.

I am hearing that we will be able to drop things off at the campsite from the car. That means you can bring more than you will probably need knowing you can store some things in the car.

Essentials:

  1. Tent
  2. Sleeping Bags
  3. Sleeping Mat/Sleeping Cot/air mattress: Note: An air mattress will assume the temperature of the ground quickly. Bring an insulator to go between your sleeping bag or blankets and the air mattress. An extra blanket works well for this.
  4. Water Bottle/Canteen
  5. Flashlight - check the batteries
  6. Personal toiletries (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc).
  7. Shower Shoes - It is a good idea to bring a pair of flip flops to wear in the showers
  8. Towels
  9. Sun Protection
  10. Bug Spray or wipes
  11. Rain Gear - We will be insured to get great weather if everyone brings their rain gear.
  12. Extra Clothes for the season: As we all know, this fall has been cool (especially in the evenings). Bring appropriate clothing. Layers work best so you can discard warmer clothes as the day heats up.
  13. Appropriate footwear - I do not recommend open toed shoes/sandals. Bring a second pair incase the first gets wet.
  14. First aid kit (if you have one for camping)

Families are responsible for any medications or personal needs supplies while camping.

Remember: since none of Den 11 has their whittling badge, none of our scouts should be carrying their personal pocket knives.

Does anyone have a large awning/dinning fly? If it does rain a little, it would be a place we could gather outside our tents.

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions

Dan

October Updates

Upcoming Dates:

October Belt Loop: October 9, 2009 (Optional)
If you are able to make tonight’s Belt Loop Activity we will see you there.

Order Bobcat Badges: October 14, 2009
I will need to submit our Achievement Report on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 to get the Bobcat Badges ordered. After you have completed the requirements, please e-mail Matt Lawson and Dan Betts so we can update the Achievement Sheet on the Den 11 Website. I will also be calling parents to check in and see how everyone is doing a just ahead of the deadline.

Fall Family Camping: October 16-18, 2009
Scouts and families can start arriving after 4:00 PM at the Bert Adams Scout Reservation South of Covington, GA. With getting out of work and Atlanta Traffic, most families will probably not arrive until later. There will be a host/information person at the gate when you arrive to Bert Adams to direct you to your Packs camp site. It looks like this will be a really big camping event involving all the Packs from the Foothills Council. Last year, I believe, there were 25 Packs. More info on the Camping Trip to come…

October Den Meeting
We will also hold our October Den Meeting at the campout. It will be less formal and Jack Hunter and family will lead a couple activities as space fillers during the outing.

Pack Meeting: October 20, 2009
Looks like the Pack is planning a big awards ceremony for all the Tiger Dens to receive their Bobcat Badges. It will be a photo opportunity.

Marietta Journal Constitution: Wednesday, October 28, 2009.
Andrew Lawson and family will lead the Den to visit the media outlet. Matt Lawson will send out more information as the date gets nearer.

October Go-See-It
Jack Hunter and family are planning the October Go See it for the first part of November. Still working on a confirmed date.

November Belt Loop Activity: Friday, November 6, 2009

November Den Meeting
The November Den Meeting will be hosted by Matthew Grashen and family the first part of November. Still working on a confirmed date.

Future Den 11 Meetings
Going Forward I would like to then schedule the Den 11 Meetings on the First Tuesday of each month. That will give us time then to plan the Go-See-It and update our Achievement Report ahead of the Pack Meeting. If it is your month to do the planning and you have a need to change the date, we can still do that.
